Treasure Hunt in Tavira, Portugal: A Unique Way to Explore the City
I had previously done the All Treasure Hunt in Castro Marim, where we explored the castle and learned about the town’s history in a fun and interactive way. You can read about it more here. It was so much fun, so we wanted to do it again.
This time, we did it in Tavira, where we were guided through many of the town’s most recognizable points of interest. We got together an even bigger group of friends and went out to explore the town. The experience taught us a lot about the history of Tavira. This time, our mission was to find the Secret of Enlightenment. Along the way, we learned about the history of the town while collecting ribbons with words on them. We were told that once we had them all, the ribbons would reveal our final clue and unlock the Secret of Enlightenment.

What Is the All Treasure Hunt in Tavira?
The All Treasure Hunt in Tavira is an interactive walking experience that takes you through the historic center of the city while solving clues and completing challenges along the way. Instead of a traditional tour, you follow a story and work together to uncover hidden details about Tavira’s history, landmarks, and culture.
Throughout the treasure hunt, you are guided to some of Tavira’s most recognizable locations, where you meet characters, solve puzzles, and collect clues that move the story forward. Each stop reveals something new, whether it is a historical fact, a hidden corner of the city, or the next piece of the mission.
It is a fun and engaging way to explore Tavira, especially if you enjoy learning about a place through experience rather than just reading about it.
Meeting the Guardian and Beginning Our Mission
We met near the river to begin our journey, where we were introduced to the Guardian of the Secrets of Humanity. Our group was called Bodhi’s Crew, with Bodhi as our official mascot. After receiving our first clue and ribbon, we set off on our mission through Tavira.

Our First Clue at the Church of São Paulo
Along the route, we visited several historic buildings that form the foundation of Tavira’s history. Our first clue and ribbon led us to the Church of São Paulo, where we had to search inside the church to find a character representing the past. It immediately set the tone for the experience, blending history with the challenge of uncovering hidden details.

Following the Clues to the Roman Bridge
From the church, we made our way to the Roman Bridge, which sits in the center of Tavira and crosses the Rio Gilão. Although it is known as the Roman Bridge, the current structure was built in 1663 on the site of an earlier bridge that dates back to the 3rd century and once connected Faro to Castro Marim. Here, we received our next two clues and ribbons, which pointed us toward our next stop at the Town Hall.

Inside Tavira’s Original Castle Walls
After leaving the Town Hall, we made our way toward the original castle walls. We did not know exactly where they were, and of course, we went to the wrong place first, which made finding the answer a bit more challenging.
Inside the castle walls, we found the Church of Mercy (Igreja da Misericórdia), along with nearby archaeological remains. This area gave us our next two clues and ribbons, and it was one of the most interesting stops because it connected so many layers of Tavira’s history in one place.

More Clues Hidden Among Tavira’s Churches
Next up was another church. There are a lot of churches in Tavira, and this stop gave us three more clues. Some were hidden on the church itself, while another came from a Member of the Order who was waiting for us in the garden. We had to search carefully to find the ribbon, which made this part feel even more like a true treasure hunt.
The Enchanted Moorish Woman at the Former Convent
The next clue led us to a former convent that has since been converted into a hotel. Here, we had to find an Enchanted Moorish woman and break the spell. We were told that words of love or flattery might work, but instead, we decided to offer a sacrifice of a strong, sturdy man, my husband Karl. In exchange, we received another ribbon and continued on our mission.

Finding the Final Ribbon
We continued on to the next stop, another church, where we would receive our final ribbon. We had to search all around the church, carefully looking for the last clue that would complete our mission.
Unlocking the Secret of Enlightenment
Once we found the final ribbon, we made our way to the last destination. We arranged the ribbons in order to decipher the message, which gave us access to a secret door. Inside, we had to write the word that represented the city. If the Guardian accepted it, we would be granted access to a locked box containing the treasure and the Secrets of Enlightenment.
We were successful. The box opened, and we learned the Secrets. I would tell you what they are, but I might get in trouble, so you will have to do the treasure hunt yourself if you want to find out. In the end, we were knighted by the Guardian of the Secrets of Humanity and received our prize.
