Castro Marim is a small historic town in the eastern Algarve, right near the Spanish border. It is known for its castle views, salt flats, and quiet little streets that feel completely untouched by time. With the stone walls and whitewashed houses, it almost feels like you stepped into another century. Most people explore it during the day, but seeing it after dark is a completely different experience.
We took part in the Castro Marim Night Treasure Hunt with some friends, and it ended up being such a fun way to experience the town. The castle dates back to the late 1200s, and alongside it sits the Fort of São Sebastião. Inside the castle walls, there is a church and even the old torture chambers, which are honestly pretty gruesome. Just outside the castle is the original tavern, which is still operating. Walking inside really does feel like stepping back in time. You can even dress up in traditional costumes while you are there, and they serve delicious mead, beer, and a few simple, but really good, dishes.
It is such a cool setup, and this was actually my third visit. Somehow it never gets old.

What Is the Night Treasure Hunt?
The treasure hunt was hosted by AllTreasureHunt. The night treasure hunt, Castro Marim, is an interactive evening event that takes place around the castle and old town. Instead of just walking around and looking at historic buildings, you become part of the experience. Participants follow clues, solve small challenges, and move through different areas of the castle and village as the story unfolds.
Along the way, you will meet costumed characters, explore hidden corners, and complete fun tasks that tie into the town’s history. It feels part scavenger hunt, part theater, and part history lesson, but in a way that is actually entertaining. While we did ours in Castro Marim, these night treasure hunts are organized in different towns around the Algarve throughout the year.
It is designed for groups and families, and it turns a quiet historic village into something much more lively after dark.
Why Visit Castro Marim?
Castro Marim is one of those smaller Algarve towns that often gets overlooked, but it is absolutely worth a stop. Between the medieval castle, the Fort of São Sebastião, and the surrounding salt baths, it has a mix of history and scenery that feels different from the typical beach towns.
It is quieter than many Algarve hotspots, which makes it perfect if you want something a little more relaxed and less crowded. Whether you visit during the day to explore the castle or at night for the treasure hunt, it is a town that feels authentic and full of character.
Our Experience at the Night Treasure Hunt in Castro Marim
We met in the main square where our group, the Senescal Squires, gathered with the other teams. Right away, we were introduced to the Leader of the Order, who explained the rules and handed us our first clue.

That first clue sent us straight into the action. We were directed to an open shop door where we were searched for our next hint. Yes, actually searched. It immediately made the whole thing feel more immersive and less like a typical walking tour.

We continued on with the next clue, making our way through the narrow streets and up toward the castle. Along the way, the views of the castle lit up at night were incredible. Seeing it glowing against the dark sky made the whole experience feel even more dramatic.

Along the way, one member of our team had to shoot a bow and arrow to earn our next clue. It was one of those moments where you realize this is more than just following directions. It added a fun, slightly competitive element and made everyone a little more invested.

Our next clue led us near a windmill where we met another Member of the Order. She performed a sound bath ceremony before giving us our next clue. It was such an unexpected moment in the middle of a treasure hunt and made the whole experience feel a little mystical.

Next, we entered the castle itself. There were a couple of clues hidden inside, and one of the stops included a belly dancer who pulled us into the performance. Yes, we danced. It definitely was not something I expected during a treasure hunt, but that is what made the whole night so fun and unpredictable.

The Tavern Finale
From there, we set out to find the key that would unlock the tavern. Once we arrived, the mood shifted from competition to celebration. We were told to relax, enjoy ourselves, and finally eat and drink.
They brought out mead along with cheese plates filled with delicious local cheeses, honey, jam, and some of the tastiest tomatoes. After running around solving clues all evening, it felt like the perfect reward.

During all the merriment, we were told there was one final task. Somewhere in the tavern was a hidden box, and only one group had the key that would open it. Of course, we searched like we were about to win a medieval lottery.
Sadly, we did not have the magic key.
A Night We Will Not Forget
After the box was opened, all of the groups were knighted by the Leader of the Order and given tokens and small prizes. It was the perfect dramatic ending to the night. We stayed at the tavern, eating and drinking until it closed, not quite ready for it to be over.
It really was such a fun experience and a completely different way to spend an evening in Castro Marim. The next event will be held in Tavira, and we are already planning to go.

Bring a light jacket if you are going outside of summer. Evenings in the Algarve can cool down quickly, especially near the castle.
Arrive a little early so you are not rushing. The experience starts in the town square, and it is more fun if you have a few minutes to settle in and meet your team.
Do not be afraid to participate. The more you lean into the costumes, challenges, and performances, the more fun you will have.
If you are going with a group, book ahead to make sure there is space. These events can fill up, especially in spring and summer.
