A glass jar filled with a reddish-brown spice mix sits on a wooden table, with its black lid resting nearby.

Spice mixes are not very common in Portugal, and when you do find them, they rarely taste like the ones we grew up with in the United States. Taco seasoning is one of those things Americans pack in their suitcase when they move abroad. The problem is that it eventually runs out. Instead of rationing your last packet like it is gold, it is easier to make your own homemade taco seasoning recipe at home. (Read this post to see what else I made sure to bring with me)

What Is Taco Seasoning?

Taco seasoning is a simple spice blend traditionally used in Mexican and Tex-Mex cooking. In the United States, it usually comes in those little packets that get tossed into ground beef for tacos. But it is really just a mix of everyday spices like chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, oregano, and salt.

The nice thing is it is not just for tacos. It works in soups, chili, roasted vegetables, beans, chicken, and pretty much anything that needs a little warmth and flavor.

Why I Started Making My Own

I use taco seasoning for multiple dishes, including chicken tortilla soup, southwestern zucchini boats, chili, and an amazing sauce I make. I do not actually use it for tacos, though; I hate it on tacos.

When we moved, I brought a large container of Lane’s Fiesta Taco Seasoning with me, but we ran out of it pretty quickly. Instead of trying to track down another container, I started making my own homemade taco seasoning recipe. It is actually really simple to make and way more cost-effective.

How To Use This Taco Seasoning

Obviously, you can use this homemade taco seasoning recipe for classic tacos. But it is good for a lot more than that.

Here are a few easy ideas:

• Chicken tortilla soup
• Chili
• Taco bowls with rice and beans
• Sautéed peppers and onions
• Roasted potatoes
• Seasoned ground turkey or beef for meal prep
• Roasted chickpeas
• Sprinkled over grilled chicken

If I am being honest, I throw it into anything that feels a little bland and needs help.

Ingredients for Taco Seasoning

(makes about an ounce worth)

  • 1 Tablespoon Chili Powder (spice level is up to you, if you want it even spicier, you can add extra or take some out if you prefer it mild)
  • 1.5 teaspoons Ground Cumin
  • 1 teaspoon Sea Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper (I don’t like pepper, so I leave it out)
  • ½ teaspoon Paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Onion Powder
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed Red Pepper Flakes
  • ¼ teaspoon Dried Oregano

Recipe Instructions

Add all of the spices to a small bowl and mix well until everything is evenly combined. You can also add them directly to a jar with a lid and shake until fully mixed.

Transfer the taco seasoning to an airtight jar or spice container and store at room temperature. It will keep well for several months, especially if your spices are fresh.

If you cook with it often, feel free to double or triple the recipe and make a larger batch at once. It saves time and is much more cost-effective than buying individual packets.

How To Store Homemade Taco Seasoning

Store your taco seasoning in an airtight jar or spice container at room temperature. A small glass jar works perfectly.

If your spices are fresh, the mix will stay good for about 6 to 12 months. It will not “go bad” quickly, but the flavor will slowly fade over time. I try to make smaller batches, so it always tastes strong.

Variations

One of the best things about making your own taco seasoning is that you can adjust it to your taste.

For a spicier version:
Add extra chili powder, cayenne pepper, or red pepper flakes.

For a smoky flavor:
Use smoked paprika or a little chipotle powder.

For a milder version:
Reduce the chili powder and skip any added heat.

For gluten-free taco seasoning:
Most single spices are naturally gluten-free, but some store-bought blends can contain additives or anti-caking agents. Making your own at home gives you full control, especially if you need certified gluten-free spices.

FAQ

Is taco seasoning gluten-free?

Most basic spices are naturally gluten-free. However, some store-bought taco seasoning packets may contain additives or fillers. Making your own homemade taco seasoning recipe ensures you know exactly what is in it.

How much taco seasoning equals one packet?

Most store-bought packets contain about 2 to 3 tablespoons of seasoning. You can measure out the same amount from your homemade blend when a recipe calls for one packet.

Can I use this for more than tacos?

Yes. It works in soups, chili, beans, rice dishes, roasted vegetables, and even as a dry rub for chicken or beef.
