Every year, the town of Carvoeiro hosts its Black and White Night to kick off the summer season for the Algarve. Carvoeiro Black and White Night is a huge event in the Algarve that takes over the town with music stages, DJs, street performers, fireworks, and a ton of people dressed in black and white. It happens every June and attracts thousands of locals and tourists.

I had seen info about it before, leading up to the party, but there are so many events in the Algarve that it’s hard to go to so many, so we pick and choose which sound best or are closest. However, after the event last year, I saw pictures and videos of it, and it looked amazing, so I decided I wanted to go this year, and I dragged my friend Alishia with me.

Alishia and I. We didn’t plan to coordinate so perfectly😂

Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro is about an hour away from Tavira. It is a small town in the Western Algarve. There are about 3,000 people who live there. It has a stunning beach and coastline. There were a lot of restaurants and bars there, and it seemed to be pretty lively, especially considering that there aren’t that many residents. Many of the bars and restaurants are on the cliff and offer a fantastic view.

My Night at the Black and White Party

We got there right after things kicked off around 8:30 pm. The streets into the centro were closed, but they had satellite parking with free shuttle buses running people in. The whole town was taken over with decorations, street performers, and seven stages offering everything from DJs and cultural music to string quartets, a harpist, fire shows, magic, a silent disco, and even a black-and-white movie on an outdoor screen. We grabbed drinks, wandered around, and watched a DJ set on the beach at sunset before heading to the silent disco, which was a hit with my friends once they realized how it worked.

Later, we went back to the main beach stage, where the DJ had a violinist and saxophonist playing in a 3D octagon cage with bursts of fire and a giant glowing moon suspended over the crowd. Pretty wild setup for a free public event. After dancing through a 90s stage, we finally headed out to catch the shuttle. The line didn’t look bad, but it took forty minutes to get on, and it kept growing behind us. We were glad we bailed when we did, since we still had an hour drive home, and it had already been a long night.

What to Expect

Expect big crowds, especially near the beach stage and main streets. The music ranges from DJs and electronic sets to live instrumental performances, cultural showcases, and throwback stages. Early in the evening, it skews family-friendly with kids running around and strollers in the mix. Late night leans more towards nightlife energy. Carvoeiro has hills and cobblestone, so accessibility can be tricky in some spots, and comfortable shoes are a smart choice. Most people dress in black and white, which makes photos look great even though it is not a strict rule. Transportation is busy after midnight because everyone tries to leave at once, so plan extra time for shuttles or pick-up apps. Food and drinks are available through bars, restaurants, and occasional vendors, but lines get long during peak hours, so eating or hydrating early pays off.

Parking and Transport

The main town is blocked off, but they offer free shuttle service from multiple parking lots around town. Shuttles run often. Getting back to the car on the shuttle bus may be more difficult as the lines at the end of the night are very long.

Food and Drink

There are many options for food and drinks. Many restaurants offer special menus for the night. There are also street food vendors and bar carts set up around town. Lines can be long though. For water, beers, or light snacks, it’s also easy to pop into a small bodega.

Tips for Attending Carvoeiro Black and White Night

  • Arrive early because the roads into town clog, and parking becomes a mythical concept
  • Wear comfortable shoes because Carvoeiro is basically a vertical puzzle of hills and steps
  • Bring water because bars get slammed, and waiting in line just to hydrate feels like a side quest
  • If you want the best photos, hit the boardwalk before peak crowds
  • Families should go earlier because it turns more nightlife energy later on
  • Taxis and rides get surgey after midnight, so plan your exit strategy

My Takeaways

The Carvoeiro Black and White party definitely lived up to its expectations. This was the crowd when we left. All the way from the beach to as far back as I could see, just a ton of people, including us, having the best time, living their best life. Hopefully I can go again next year!
