I created my first coloring book, Azulejos de Tavira, over two years ago. I always knew I wanted to turn it into a series, but life has a way of getting in the way. Also, ADHD. Out of sight, out of mind is very real. But I finally did it, and Azulejos de Lisboa (The Tiles of Lisbon) is finally available!
The Inspiration to Create Volume Two
When I went home to New Mexico last year, my grandma showed me her copy of my Tavira coloring book, and it was almost completely finished. She told me I needed to hurry up and make another one. Seeing how much she loved it and how much she had used it was exactly the push I needed to finally create the next volume.
My Love Letter to Lisbon
This second book, Azulejos de Lisboa, is my love letter to Lisbon. It is my absolute favorite city. It is where my heart and soul feel happiest.
I had taken a few photos of tiles during previous visits, but when we went back again in June with a group of friends, I made it a mission to photograph as many as possible. I wandered through the city looking for unique patterns, colors, and stories hidden in the tiles. By the end of the trip, I finally had enough to create the book.
My Process for Turning Tiles into Coloring Pages
The first step in my process, after taking all the pictures, is going through all the photos. I edit each one on my phone, adjusting the shape, size, brightness, and clarity. I also make sure the lines are as straight and aligned as possible.
After editing, I sent the photos to my husband. He created three different programs that convert the photos into coloring pages. Each program produces slightly different results, so I review every version and choose the one that looks best.
Once I have enough finished images, I move everything into Canva. There, I format the pages, adjust sizing if needed, arrange the order, and design the cover.
When the book is complete, I upload it to Amazon KDP, where I finalize the details and publish it. After Amazon approves it, the book becomes available for sale.
A Look at the Tiles
Challenges and Surprises Along the Way
The most challenging part is taking the original photos, but it is also my favorite part. It gives me an excuse to wander through the city and really notice the details around me. I try to find tiles that are in good condition. A little wear adds character, but too much damage makes the final coloring page unclear.
Another challenge is choosing between the different converted versions. Sometimes they are very similar, and it can be difficult to decide which one will create the best coloring experience. I want every page to be perfect but also fun, relaxing, and beautiful when finished.
How Azulejos de Lisboa Is Different from Azulejos de Tavira
Each region in Portugal has its own tile style. In the Algarve, the designs tend to be more geometric. In Lisbon, the tiles are often more detailed and can tell stories through their patterns. In Porto, many tiles depict full historical scenes.
The colors, patterns, and artistic styles vary depending on the region, but they are always beautiful and deeply connected to Portuguese culture.

Final Thoughts
Creating Azulejos de Lisboa was incredibly meaningful to me. It combines so many things I love: photography, Portugal, creativity, and sharing something personal with others.
Seeing my grandma finish almost an entire book reminded me of why I started this in the first place. These books are not just about coloring. They are about capturing places, preserving memories, and helping people slow down and enjoy the process.
