What Halloween Looks Like in Portugal
Halloween is not as popular in Portugal as it is in the U.S. or in some of the other places that celebrate it. But as more and more people move here, it has become increasingly popular. It is still mostly the foreigners who go all out for it. I love Halloween! I love dressing up, and the makeup, and it’s always just another excuse to have a good time. Most of my friends here are also expats, so we have been able to celebrate with them.

Expats Celebrating in Tavira
My friends Tracy and Geo had a big Halloween party on the weekend before. It was a lot of fun. There were a lot of people, and everyone came with great costumes. We had great food that another friend, Patrick, made. He’s a chef and has a catering and takeaway business here in Tavira, and his food is always amazing. I dressed up as a Dia de los Muertos Catrina, and Karl was a Grim Reaper. I wanted to dress up Bodhi as a skeleton, but I couldn’t find him a costume.

Halloween Night in Town
On Halloween night, I dressed up Bodhi and me as Lilo and Stitch. There were a few Halloween parties in town, but as I walked through town, no one was dressed up. I felt a little ridiculous 😂😂😂. We went to the Black Anchor, which is an Irish Bar. There was supposed to be a party, but it wasn’t very lively so we had a couple of drinks there and then headed to Ofelia, our favorite cocktail bar. They had a special Halloween drink menu. There were a few people dressed up, and it was pretty busy, but it was still pretty quiet compared to a Halloween party in Vegas. It was fun though, because we were there with friends. And Bodhi had the best costume by far!

Wrap Up & Seasonal Thoughts
Halloween in Tavira may not be as wild or crowded as celebrations in big cities, but it has its own charm. It’s a mix of expat enthusiasm, local flair, and simple fun with friends. Whether you’re in costume at a party, wandering the town on the night of October 31, or sipping a themed cocktail with good company, it’s a relaxed and memorable way to celebrate the season in the Algarve.
